South African Army Military Skills Development System

Young South Africans have the opportunity to serve in uniform on a two-year contract through the South African Army’s Military Skills Development System (MSDS).

In their first year of duty, the recruits will go through military training as well as additional functional training. Depending on the length of the functional orientation, they will be deployed where necessary during their second year of service, giving them the chance to put their knowledge and talents to use.

General Requirements

  • RSA Citizen (No Dual citizenship)
  • Candidates between the ages of 18 and 22 (you can apply with grade 12)
  • Candidates aged 18 to 26 (require 3 years Tertiary Qualification)
  • 12th grade successfully completed (Level 4 Mathematics and Science will be advantageous)
  • 17 or higher on the Admission Point Score (APS), omitting Life Orientation (LO)
  • possess neither a criminal history nor open cases
  • Comply with the appointment’s health criteria
  • No apparent tattoos (Legs, Lower Arm, Neck, and Face)
  • During the selection process, a physical fitness test will be administered.

Further Requirements

  • Males must be 155 cm and females 148 cm in height.
  • Males and females must both weigh at least 52 kg.
