HISTORY OF TANZANIA MAINLAND PRISON ARMY
1.0. Introduction
The Police and Prison forces were split on August 25, 1931, which resulted in the creation of the Prison Army. Prior to 1931, the Police Force carried out the functions of Prisons as they were understood and used by the colonists, although having obligations to protect the safety and property of Foreigners. When it first began operating, the Prison Service was known as the Prison Department, and its operations remained those of a colonial regime that involved torturing inmates and making them work hard regardless of whether it was in their or the country’s best interests.
2.0 Vision and responsibility of the Prison Service
The Prison Service in the 1990s established its mission and responsibility based on the various changes that occurred. The mission of the Prison Service is to be a highly specialized correctional force operating in accordance with national and international regulations and standards. AJIRA MPYA
The Prison Service is accountable for carrying out its duties to strengthen societal protection through the management of imprisonment and managing criminals, prisoner services, programs and services that address the needs of criminals undergoing rehabilitation, and Policy advice on crime prevention and handling of criminals.
The Prison Service seeks to protect society from criminals and so enable it to fully participate in diverse production activities for economic and social growth by maintaining convicts in a secure environment.
Additionally, the Prison Service aims to allow prisoners to give up criminal activity in prison and live law-abiding lives when they return to society after serving their sentences by offering rehabilitation and training programs for production and protection activities. AJIRA MPYA
3.0 Roles and objectives of the Prison Service
The Prison Service’s duties include helping to establish, improve, and preserve community safety in the nation by taking the following actions: –
• To keep all convicts under legal custody confined to prisons.
