United Nations University PhD in Sustainability Science (2023)

The United Nations University (UNU) offers a Ph.D. in Sustainability Science through its Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) based in Tokyo, Japan. The program focuses on interdisciplinary research that addresses the complex challenges of sustainability, including environmental, social, and economic issues. It emphasizes an integrated, systems approach to understanding and addressing these challenges, drawing on the natural and social sciences, as well as engineering and other relevant disciplines. The program typically takes 4-5 years to complete and includes coursework, research, and a thesis defense.

Application Procedure:

Application Guidelines for 2023

For comprehensive application information and documents, please carefully read the Guidelines.

Please follow the instructions below to submit your application.

All applicants:

  1. Examine the check list, then gather the required application materials according to the Guidelines.
  2. Use this link to register online to get the application form: Registration for Applications.
  3. Obtain an email with a link to the application form from the UNU-IAS Admissions Office.
  4. by the deadline, submit the application form (17 February 2023).
  5. Get a confirmation email from the admissions office that your application has been received.

Applicants who are shortlisted for an interview:

6) Obtain instructions through email on how and when to submit more supporting documents.

7) the accompanying documentation must be emailed by the due date (expected to be early April 2023).

8) Referees will receive a request for a reference via email from the admissions office, along with a deadline (expected to be early April 2023).

You cannot save your application and finish it later; the application must be completed in one session. Please gather the resources required in the application guidelines and make sure they are all available before beginning to fill out the application form.

There are 12 parts of questions and essay prompts on the application form. Before you click the submit button at the conclusion of the form, you can go back to earlier sections to amend the answered boxes using the back/next buttons that are located at the bottom of each area.

Important Notes

  • English must be entered and filled out on all application forms. Incomplete or handwritten application materials wonโ€™t be taken into consideration.
  • No application-related materials or papers can be returned; they become the property of UNU-IAS.
  • Admission will be canceled if any falsification is found in any of the application-related papers.
  • Reapplying applicants from prior years who were rejected for admission must submit a brand-new set of application materials, including letters of recommendation. No previously submitted items will be accepted as supporting materials. (United Nations University PhD in Sustainability Science)
  • Please only submit one application form. If a single applicant submits numerous Application Forms, the most recent form received will be taken into consideration. Older versions wonโ€™t be taken into account.

Withdrawing an Application

Selection and Announcement of Results

At any moment, UNU-IAS may ask applicants for more information, such as an interview, as well as verification of the data and documents theyโ€™ve given as part of their application.

  • Email sent to the address on the application form will be used to notify successful applicants. A letter of acceptance will be issued together with any paperwork required for the admissions process. A medical certificate, sealed official transcript(s), and a certified copy of the degree certificate are requirements for successful applicants (s). Only qualified candidates who deliver the required admission materials and transfer 50% of the first academic yearโ€™s tuition costs (5,000 USD, non-refundable) within 10 UNU working days of result announcement will be accepted into the program (please refer to UNU Holidays on Academic Calendar page). No matter what unique circumstances the student may have, the matriculation date (early September 2023) cannot be moved.
  • The Admissions Office will NOT contact each unsuccessful candidate directly through phone or email. By the end of June 2023, if you have not heard back from the admissions office on your application, it has been rejected.   • The main way to communicate will be via email. All applicants must therefore include a valid email address on the application form and ensure that they frequently check their inbox.
